Politics - The Federal Cabinet has approved a plan by the Minister for the North Sea Johan Vande Lanotte (Flemish socialist) for the construction of two so-called “energy islands” off the coast of West Flanders. The islands will be built in the sea of Zeebrugge and the resort of De Haan.

Life - The Oude Geuze beer made by the Flemish Brabant brewery Oud Beersel has won top prize at the 21st Australian International Beer Awards in Melbourne. As well as winning the overall prize for best beer, Oud Beersel also took the gold medal in the Lambic Beer category as well as winning a trophy in the category Best Belgian & French Style Ale.

Politics - A new opinion poll carried out on behalf of the VRT and the daily ‘De Standaard’ shows a drop in support Bart De Wever’s party. However, N-VA still polls around 4% more than it did at the last federal elections. The Greens are up as are the parties of the far-left and the far-right.

Politics - When asked which politician they could imagine voting for if he or she stood in their constituency, the respondents to a poll carried out on behalf of the VRT and the daily ‘De Standaard’ put the Flemish Prime Minister Kris Peeters (Christian democrat) at the top of the pile. 54% of those that expressed a preference said that they could imagine voting for Mr Peeters, 7% more than his nearest rival, the Flemish nationalist leader Bart De Wever.

Videozone - An accident involving a crane from the Flemish Brabant Sarens company has left one person dead and another two injured. The accident happened in the Swedish port city of Sörooker, around 300 km north of the capital Stockholm.

Sports - In cycling, Tony Martin won the 3rd stage in the Tour of Belgium, an individual time trial in Beveren-Waas. The reigning World Champion against the clock also snatches the leader's jersey from his compatriot André Greipel, continuing the German dominance. After 3 Flemish stages, the tour will finish this weekend in Wallonia.

The Great War - The federal government wants to invite a number of top politicians and personalities to the Great War commemoration ceremony in Ieper and Nieuwpoort, including the American president Barack Obama and Britain's Queen Elizabeth. The invitations are being prepared, the schedules are being worked out in detail.
